ADAPTATIONS

This is a wild orchid tree at my site. Trees have several basic needs for survival. The basic needs are water, light, air, and nutrients or minerals. Trees also need to be able to reproduce to keep their species from becoming extinct. The wild orchid tree gets water from when it rains, light from when the sun shines down on it, air, of course from it's surroundings, and nutrient and minerals from the soil. Like I said in my previous blog post, this site contains rich top soil.

Another organism that I found a large amount of at my site were ants. Red ants, black ants, small ants, big ants, a variety of ants. Ants are like us, they keep livestock, they tend aphids to milk them for nectar. They farm too. Ants use vegetation to grow fungus in their "gardens" to feed their colony. Ants leave chemical traces behind for other ants to locate food.

You may not see them in the picture, but the last organism that I found at my site were centipedes. Centipedes have several adaptations that help them survive in their environments. They include poison claws, a lot of legs, and they live a nocturnal life. With their poison claws, centipedes can defend themselves from their prey like spiders and other insects. With numerous legs, the centipede can also defend itself from its prey by traveling fast when it is being chased, making it difficult for its prey to capture it. Most centipedes stay in dark, moist areas like under rich top soil where food is abundant.
